Spam
Background
Spam is the junk mail of the internet.
E-mail spam targets individual users with direct mail messages. E-mail spam lists are often created by scanning Usenet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses. Email spams typically cost users money out-of-pocket to receive. Many people - anyone with measured phone service - read or receive their mail while the meter is running, so to speak. Spam costs them additional money. On top of that, it costs money for ISPs and online services to transmit spam, and these costs are transmitted directly to subscribers.1How do I stop it from coming?
- Don't give your e-mail address out to everyone who asks for it, instead...
- Have a couple of e-mail addresses, your "main" one that you pay for, and some "fake" free accounts from Yahoo! or Hotmail. User your "fake" e-mail address for product registration and any other times you have to enter an e-mail address, and give your "real" address to friends and family. This way you can check the "fake" accounts once a month or so, and you won't have to worry about missing something important.
- Don't reply back to any Spam mail, this only lets the sender know that your account is active.
- Install a Spam filter program such as SpamKiller.
- Take advantage of filters that are already in place (Yahoo! has a Spam filter, Outlook has Junk e-mail filters, etc...)
